1. A New Membership Development Chair for Maui:

Thank you to Adrian Cogan who recently moved to Maui and has volunteered
to be our newest Membership Development Chair. Please make him welcome!
His email address is a.cogan@ieee.org.

We were informed that we can have a Membership Development Chair for each
island. Please contact John Camery if you or someone you know would like
to serve as a Membership Development Chair on one of the other islands.
John's email is john.camery@ieee.org.

2. Upcoming Elections for the Computer Society:

Our Computer Society Chapter is putting out a call for nominations, so we
can elect new chapter officers by the end of the year. John Camery is
serving as chapter chair and David Morse is serving as vice chair for the
chapter until the elections. If anyone can help out by serving as an
officer, please let us know. And join us Aug. 14th at the Box Jelly!

3. A New Website for the Hawaii Section: www.ieee-hawaii.org:

We announced our website development contest which is open to all our
student members. The aim is to develop a better web presence for our
Hawaii Section and chapters. David Morse is organizing the contest.
Contact him for details at David.Morse@ieee.org, or visit our interim
homepage at www.ieee-hawaii.org for more information. Comments welcome!

4. Nominations due July 31st for the IEEE-USA STEM Award:

If any of our Hawaii Section members are working with an educator on a
STEM Outreach project, please let us know so we can consider nominating
them for the IEEE-USA Precollege Educator-Engineer Partnership 2013
Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize collaborative activities
between K-12 educators and technical professionals who are IEEE members.

5. K-12 education update: Will waiver help STEM?

The Hawaii DOE is in the process of drafting an ESEA waiver application.
Using the "Hawaii Growth Model" and applying a new accountability system,
the hope is "better support of schools, teachers, and students in
achieving success..." This is a short-fuse activity, with aprox. two
weeks for public input (early August). IEEE members concerned about the
future of science, technology, engineering and math should contact
Stephanie Shipton at Hawaii State DOE and submit your recommendations for
improved school accountability, community involvement, and technical
education.

CyberPatriot needs you! Your High School could win!

Like computers? Want to help kids? Well how about guiding them in the
basics of setting up and securing a server? It's easy! The folks at
uscyberpatriot.org have pre-packaged the entire competition with
tutorials and a virtual server image for kids to launch and configure.
Your job? Just be a helping hand - most of the teams (high schools and
JROTCs) have teachers for coaches. But often, the teacher doesn't know
the first thing about technology. That's where you come in as a Mentor!
Visit the site: http://www.uscyberpatriot.org/HowYouFit/mentors.aspx

7. Events:

- Thursday August 2nd is "SQLSaturday" at the Honolulu Community College. SQLSaturday is a free
training event for SQL Server professionals and those wanting to learn

- Aug. 6th ExCom meeting - all are welcome, plan the future! The first
Monday of the month as usual, at 5:30PM, at Zippy's on Vineyard. The
Executive Committee meets to discuss Hawaii Section business, plan
activities, and define the organization's positions on issues. Map

- Aug. 14th Computer Society Tech Talk at The Box Jelly with HiCapacity.org.
We are joining forces with HiCapacity to do some hands-on hacking. We'll
gather at 6pm Tuesday and all IEEE members are welcome. Come check out
the cool new Box Jelly and the HiCapacity maker-space!
Address: 307 Kamani Street Honolulu, HI 96813.  Map

Here's how Matthew of HiCapacity describes it:

"HI Capacity will be going over using an Arduino with a digitally addressable RGB LED strip. The Arduino IDE runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
We will begin with a short Arduino discovery session before we move on to
the LED strip. Each strip is 1m long and has 32 LEDs that can display up
to 2 million colors per LED. We will be going over how to connect an
Arduino to the strip in 1m and 5m lengths. We'll have all the necessary
materials and equipment on hand, but everyone is welcome to bring a
laptop. Using the strip will require a bit of math but we'll simplify it
so that you can get it up and running quickly."
