1. A New Membership Development Chair for Maui:

Thank you to Adrian Cogan who recently moved to Maui and has volunteered
to be our newest Membership Development Chair. Please make him welcome!
His email address is a.cogan@ieee.org.

We were informed that we can have a Membership Development Chair for each
island. Please contact John Camery if you or someone you know would like
to serve as a Membership Development Chair on one of the other islands.
John's email is john.camery@ieee.org.

2. Upcoming Elections for the Computer Society:

Our Computer Society Chapter is putting out a call for nominations, so we
can elect new chapter officers by the end of the year. John Camery is
serving as chapter chair and David Morse is serving as vice chair for the
chapter until the elections. If anyone can help out by serving as an
officer, please let us know. And join us Aug. 14th at the Box Jelly!

3. A New Website for the Hawaii Section: www.ieee-hawaii.org:

We announced our website development contest which is open to all our
student members. The aim is to develop a better web presence for our
Hawaii Section and chapters. David Morse is organizing the contest.
Contact him for details at David.Morse@ieee.org, or visit our interim
homepage at www.ieee-hawaii.org for more information. Comments welcome!

4. Nominations due July 31st for the IEEE-USA STEM Award:

If any of our Hawaii Section members are working with an educator on a
STEM Outreach project, please let us know so we can consider nominating
them for the IEEE-USA Precollege Educator-Engineer Partnership 2013
Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize collaborative activities
between K-12 educators and technical professionals who are IEEE members.

5. K-12 education update: Will waiver help STEM?

The Hawaii DOE is in the process of drafting an ESEA waiver application.
Using the "Hawaii Growth Model" and applying a new accountability system,
the hope is "better support of schools, teachers, and students in
achieving success..." This is a short-fuse activity, with aprox. two
weeks for public input (early August). IEEE members concerned about the
future of science, technology, engineering and math should contact
Stephanie Shipton at Hawaii State DOE and submit your recommendations for
improved school accountability, community involvement, and technical
education.

CyberPatriot needs you! Your High School could win!

Like computers? Want to help kids? Well how about guiding them in the
basics of setting up and securing a server? It's easy! The folks at
uscyberpatriot.org have pre-packaged the entire competition with
tutorials and a virtual server image for kids to launch and configure.
Your job? Just be a helping hand - most of the teams (high schools and
JROTCs) have teachers for coaches. But often, the teacher doesn't know
the first thing about technology. That's where you come in as a Mentor!
Visit the site: http://www.uscyberpatriot.org/HowYouFit/mentors.aspx

7. Events:

- Thursday August 2nd is "SQLSaturday" at the Honolulu Community College. SQLSaturday is a free
training event for SQL Server professionals and those wanting to learn

- Aug. 6th ExCom meeting - all are welcome, plan the future! The first
Monday of the month as usual, at 5:30PM, at Zippy's on Vineyard. The
Executive Committee meets to discuss Hawaii Section business, plan
activities, and define the organization's positions on issues. Map

- Aug. 14th Computer Society Tech Talk at The Box Jelly with HiCapacity.org.
We are joining forces with HiCapacity to do some hands-on hacking. We'll
gather at 6pm Tuesday and all IEEE members are welcome. Come check out
the cool new Box Jelly and the HiCapacity maker-space!
Address: 307 Kamani Street Honolulu, HI 96813.  Map

Here's how Matthew of HiCapacity describes it:

"HI Capacity will be going over using an Arduino with a digitally addressable RGB LED strip. The Arduino IDE runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
We will begin with a short Arduino discovery session before we move on to
the LED strip. Each strip is 1m long and has 32 LEDs that can display up
to 2 million colors per LED. We will be going over how to connect an
Arduino to the strip in 1m and 5m lengths. We'll have all the necessary
materials and equipment on hand, but everyone is welcome to bring a
laptop. Using the strip will require a bit of math but we'll simplify it
so that you can get it up and running quickly."

Help Create a First Hand History

The IEEE History Center would also like to recognize all those who have been loyal members since the beginning.  It is creating a special collection of First Hand Histories submitted by these members.  If you are a 50 year member and would like to contribute a First Hand History, please see the First Hand History creation instructions.  Once your First Hand History is completed, we will mark your contribution with a graphic replica of the First 50 Year Member pin shown above.

*As a footnote I should add that the that the Hawaii Section predates the merger into the IEEE by many years as it was formed in 1950.

Announcements and the July EXCON Meeting Minutes

Attendees:
John Camery, presiding
David Morse, PACE Chair
Danny Terlip, Select Engineering Services
Jong  K. Choi, Asst. Dean, UH-Manoa
Jason Axelson
Matthew Badeau
Al Toda

Nominations are due by the end of the month for the IEEE-USA STEM Award.  See the previous post on this topic in the blog.
Adrian Cogan who recently moved to Maui is our newest Membership Development Chair.  His email address is a.cogan@ieee.org.  We were informed that we can have a Membership Development Chair for each island.  So, let me know if you or someone you know would like to serve as a Membership Development Chair on one of the other islands.
Danny Terlip also recently moved here on Oahu.  So, we want to extend a hearty welcome to him from our Hawaii Section of the IEEE.
Our Computer Society Chapter is putting out a call for nominations, so we can elect new chapter officers by the end of the year.   John Camery is serving as chapter chair and David Morse is serving as vice chair for the chapter until the elections.  If anyone can help out by serving as an officer, please let us know.
One can join the computer society (www.computer.org) without joining the IEEE (www.ieee.org), but you must join the IEEE to serve as an officer.  Join up and make a difference.   This month new members can try out membership by signing up for the second half of the year.  Our Computer Society Chapter is planning a technical meeting for August.  So, stay tuned for details.  We need two meetings to meet the minimum requirement per year for a chapter and six to get the bonus funding. We need nominees for chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer for our chapter election. Now is the time to get involved if you want to make a difference.
We announced our website development contest which is open to all our student members on Oahu and Maui.  The aim is to develop a better web presence for our Hawaii Section and chapters.  David Morse is organizing the contest.  Contact him for details at David.Morse@ieee.org.

We discussed the need to form a team in order to be in a position to put in a bid to host a conference in Hawaii.  Sept. 1, 2012 is the deadline for submitting a bid for hosting IEEE-USA 2015.  May 1, 2013 is the deadline for submitting a bid to IEEE GHTC 2014.  Once again, if anyone can help out let us know.

Various ideas were presented for technical meetings to satisfy our yearly requirements.  In particular, involvement with Makerspace groups like HI Capacity (http://hicapacity.org/) was discussed as being very mutually beneficial.  Two members of HI Capacity, Jason Axelson and Matthew Badeau, were in attendance.  We hope to sponsor joint meetings with them.  Also, ideas were presented by Song Choi to increase the involvement of student members in section and chapter meetings.   If anyone not in attendance has suggestions, please feel free to comment. Thanks.

Our next EXCOM meeting will be the first Monday of the month as usual.  That is 5:30PM on August 6, 2012 at Zippy's on Vineyard. Map.

IEEE-USA Precollege
Educator-Engineer Partnership Award

Nominations due to IEEE-USA by July 31, 2012

If any of our Hawaii Section members are working with an educator on a STEM Outreach project, please let us know so we can consider nominating them for the

IEEE-USA Precollege Educator-Engineer Partnership 2013 Award

The 2012 award was won by a Mani Moro, a member of the Oregon section, and Ryan Harvey, a science teacher at Cascade Heights Public Charter School, for a STEM Outreach program that they have developed.

The purpose of the award is to recognize collaborative activities between K-12 educators and technical professionals who are IEEE members.

The award winner(s) will receive a plaque providing the citation for the award. IEEE-USA will recognize the award winners during an award ceremony at a time and venue mutually agreed by the IEEE-USA and the recipients.  (Usually this is the IEEE-USA meeting which will be held in Portland, OR, in spring 2013.)  The winners also receive funding for travel expenses (up to $1,000 each) to attend the award ceremony.

IEEE Awards and nominations

Our UH-Manoa Student Branch has received the Central Area Award and,
as such, will be nominated for the corresponding Region 6 award
which comprises the western U.S, the largest IEEE region in the U.S.
Congratulations!

On a related note, the Hawaii Section is thrilled to have just
organized a second student branch; this time on the UH-Maui Campus.
This opens the opportunity for Maui members to act as mentors. We
hope organizing the branch will be a landmark in the effort to
provide more local activities throughout the islands. The Student
Branch Counselor is Jungwon Park (jwp33@hotmail.com) who can give
you more information on helping out in this area.

IEEE Hawaii Section Online - New Website Competition
A competition, open to Hawaii Section Student Members (as
individuals or in teams). The goal is to create a modern, useful,
secure site to be the online presence for the Hawaii Section.
Templates that comply with the IEEE National guidelines are
available (for Wordpress). Other frameworks are acceptable (such as
Drupal or xAMP+HTML). The judging will be held in November, so
student members should form teams and begin work early in the Fall.
Contact Dave Morse for details: david.morse@ieee.org.

Congratulations to Kailua HS, the MATE-2012 first place winners!
The MATE-2012 Hawaii Underwater Robot Challange was held Saturday,
May 19th at Richardson pool, Pearl Harbor. At our last Hawaii
Section EXCOM Meeting, Mark Rognstad asked for other IEEE members
volunteer to act as judges. IEEE members, Song Choi, Al Toda and
David Morse volunteered to act as judges. The first place team will
be invited to compete in the nationals at Orlando, Florida.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways members can become involved with their local
IEEE. The Hawaii Section is looking for a volunteer to serve as
Membership Development Chair. You'll begin by participating in a
monthly webinar to learn about membership development and ordering a
free membership development kit with promotional items to hand out
at events. The next webinar is 9AM, Monday, July 9, 2012. Please
contact John Camery <john.camery@gmail.com> for more information.
