Hawaii Section Newsletter

Aloha and welcome to the June issue of the IEEE Hawaii Section Newsletter!

We have many opportunities for individuals to make a difference in

their communities and profession through the IEEE. Furthermore,
any IEEE member who might be willing to serve as an officer in the

1. New Members in the Hawaii Section

We extend a hearty welcome to new members of the Hawaii Section:

Welcome to Travis Taylor who recently moved into the Hawaii Section.

2. Chapter Update

The Maui Chapter of the Hawaii Student Branch of the IEEE hosted
the first annual Student Innovation Day this past April at the new
Science Building on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus.
The Student Innovation Day was designed to exhibit the projects and
talents of the students enrolled in Maui College s Electronics and
Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) Associated Arts program and
the Engineering Technology Bachelor of Applied Science program.

Also at UH, students from the Hilo Computer Science Department won
the 2013 Microsoft U.S. Imagine Cup and will entering the worldwide
completion in Russia next month. Team Poliahu from came out on top
with its application  Help Me Help,  which focused on community aid
for disaster relief efforts.

July 1 - EXCOM meeting and Tech talk:

Buffet and Hawaii Section, COM19/SP01 Chapter Technical Talk Please
note: To help with the cost of the buffet, members pay $5.00 and
non-members $10.00. For student members and the speaker, there is
no charge. Title: The University of Hawai i Smart Sustainable
Microgrid Project Abstract: This talk starts by discussing
Hawai i s energy landscape and the Renewable Energy and Island
Sustainability (REIS) program. The state of Hawai i and the US
Department of Energy (DOE) signed a memorandum of understanding in
2008 known as the Hawai i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) requiring
70% of Hawaii s energy come from clean sources by 2030.

July 10 - Computer Society Tech Talk: "Advanced Analytics"

Presentation by Kishore Erukulapati, followed by a panel
discussion. Professionals from Big Data, Open Data, Data Mining,
and Advanced Analytics are encouraged to participate in the panel
discussion. We'll meet in the excellent Ali'i conference room of
the CaptialOne360 Cafe overlooking Fort Derussy. (free parking) All
