Minutes of the meeting
1. Immigration. IEEE Hawaii chair (John Camery) wrote letters two
Hawaii Senators on IEEE position regarding immigration. IEEE US strongly
support EB visa program and discourages drastic increases to H1 B visas to
companies that outsource jobs overseas. John Camery participated in webcast
meeting organized by IEEE USA on 5/2/13. IEEE Hawaii delegation lead by
John Camery met Senator Hirono to communicate IEEE USA's position regarding
this. Song K Choi and Kishore were part of the IEEE delegation. IEEE US
& IEEE Hawaii Section encourages all members to write to their
representatives.
2. Central Area Awards. We have two student chapters in Hawaii (UH Maui
Chapter & UH Manoa Chapter). IEEE Hawaii section would like to
recognize our active student chapters by providing banners. Student chapter
name (UH Manoa IEEE student branch, HH Maui IEEE student branch) will be
printed in the banner. This resolution was moved by David Morse, seconded
by Kishore Erukulapati.
All IEEE members are encouraged to read award description and nominate
someone appropriate in our section. Additional information is available at www.ieee.org/go/hawaii.
3. IEEE Election & Future leadership development within our section
Nominating Chair (John Borland) communicated that there is only one
nomination for the position of secretary for this year. All IEEE Hawaii
members interested in leadership positions in our section (Chair, Vice
Chair, Treasurer) are encouraged to submit nominations. It is important to
develop new leadership due to term limits on the members that are currently
in leadership roles in our section. David Morse was nominated for the
position of Section Chair.
John Camery and David Morse called IEEE Communication Chair (Oscar Libed)
during the meeting and left a voice message to find out Oscar's status.
4. Plan activities and make sure all chapters report the required meetings
a. All chapters are required to report at least two meetings per year.
David Morse confirmed that IEEE computer society meeting held in April were
published.
b. IEEE Computer Society Plans to organize a presentation in June 2013 on
"Advanced analytics" by Kishore Erukulapati, followed by a panel
discussion. Professionals from Big Data, Open Data, Data Mining, and
Advanced Analytics are encouraged to participate in the panel discussion.
Additional details will be forthcoming soon.
c. PACE Chair (David Morse) communicated that PACE meeting will be held in
August and will be sponsored by IEEE Hawaii Section and Computer Society
Chapter. IEEE USA provides $500 funding for this. This will focus on 5
minutes turbo talk by participants. The best presentations will be posted
in social media. Additional details will be forthcoming soon.
5. Distribute MD materials. Materials (IEEE pens/pads/membership
material) were distributed to meeting participants.
6. Tech Talk. June EXCOM Meeting will include tech talk on "antennas"
from our guest (Eran Agmon). This will be held at Maple Garden Restaurant,
5:30 pm, Monday, 3 June.
