IEEE Sections Congress 2014

IEEE Sections Congress is part of the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board (MGA) Strategy to implement the MGA Vision, Mission, and Goals for the purpose of fulfilling IEEE's mission. The theme of IEEE Sections Congress 2014 is "Inspiring Our Leaders of Tomorrow."

IEEE Sections Congress 2014 (SC2014) will be held 22-24 August 2014 in Amsterdam, Netherlands at the RAI Convention Centre. SC2014 is an opportunity for IEEE representatives from all over the world to participate in a unique event. SC2014 will provide the tools and training to assist geographic unit leaders in focusing their activities solely on the member and increasing members’ participation in IEEE activities.

The goals of Sections Congress 2014 are three-fold

  1. to provide an opportunity for delegates to gain information and training skills;
  2. to network and build relationships with other volunteers within IEEE;
  3. to serve as a forum for Section representatives and other local leaders, enabling them to voice – on behalf of the collective membership – the ideas, issues, and recommendations which will impact the development and growth of IEEE throughout the world, reinforcing its vitality and relevance to those it serves.
In addition to the individual growth and networking fostered by Sections Congress, there are more far-reaching results.
The caucuses will generate specific, practical recommendations for action.  During the Closing Ceremony, the delegates will have the opportunity to assign a priority level to each of the recommendations through the balloting process.
The results will be announced as part of the Ceremony and will be delivered to the IEEE Board of Directors for implementation in strategic planning for the future of IEEE.

Minutes of the meeting

1. Immigration. IEEE Hawaii chair (John Camery) wrote letters two Hawaii Senators on IEEE position regarding immigration. IEEE US strongly support EB visa program and discourages drastic increases to H1 B visas to companies that outsource jobs overseas. John Camery participated in webcast meeting organized by IEEE USA on 5/2/13. IEEE Hawaii delegation lead by John Camery met Senator Hirono to communicate IEEE USA's position regarding this. Song K Choi and Kishore were part of the IEEE delegation. IEEE US & IEEE Hawaii Section encourages all members to write to their representatives.

2. Central Area Awards.  We have two student chapters in Hawaii (UH Maui Chapter & UH Manoa Chapter). IEEE Hawaii section would like to recognize our active student chapters by providing banners. Student chapter name (UH Manoa IEEE student branch, HH Maui IEEE student branch) will be printed in the banner. This resolution was moved by David Morse, seconded by Kishore Erukulapati.

All IEEE members are encouraged to read award description and nominate someone appropriate in our section. Additional information is available at www.ieee.org/go/hawaii.

3. IEEE Election & Future leadership development within our section
Nominating Chair (John Borland) communicated that there is only one nomination for the position of secretary for this year. All IEEE Hawaii members interested in leadership positions in our section (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer) are encouraged to submit nominations. It is important to develop new leadership due to term limits on the members that are currently in leadership roles in our section. David Morse was nominated for the position of Section Chair.

John Camery and David Morse called IEEE Communication Chair (Oscar Libed) during the meeting and left a voice message to find out Oscar's status.

4. Plan activities and make sure all chapters report the required meetings
a. All chapters are required to report at least two meetings per year. David Morse confirmed that IEEE computer society meeting held in April were published.

b. IEEE Computer Society Plans to organize a presentation in June 2013 on "Advanced analytics" by Kishore Erukulapati, followed by a panel discussion. Professionals from Big Data, Open Data, Data Mining, and Advanced Analytics are encouraged to participate in the panel discussion. Additional details will be forthcoming soon.

c. PACE Chair (David Morse) communicated that PACE meeting will be held in August and will be sponsored by IEEE Hawaii Section and Computer Society Chapter. IEEE USA provides $500 funding for this. This will focus on 5 minutes turbo talk by participants. The best presentations will be posted in social media. Additional details will be forthcoming soon.

5. Distribute MD materials. Materials (IEEE pens/pads/membership material) were distributed to meeting participants.

6. Tech Talk.  June EXCOM Meeting will include tech talk on "antennas" from our guest (Eran Agmon). This will be held at Maple Garden Restaurant, 5:30 pm, Monday, 3 June.
