B. Science Fair. The 55th Hawai‘i State Science and
Engineering Fair (HSSEF) is being held
April 2-4, 2012, at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. Chris Russell, our vice chair, has returned
from a long tour in Afghanistan in time to help out with the judging at the
Hawaii‘s State Science and Engineering Fair(HSSEF). Each year we help support the
fair by providing IEEE awards to students in Senior and Junior Research and
their teachers. We have been fortunate to have Tep Dobry serve as the IEEE POC. If anyone else
can help out, please let us know. It is not too soon to volunteer for next
year.
C. Goals for 2012-2013. We are having an IEEE Hawaii Section Dinner Meeting on the
new vision for our section, 9 April, 6:30pm, Maple Garden Restaurant in
Moiliili. Oscar, Marji and David have
agreed to be on the panel. Can anyone else help out? Arrangements? Computer,
projector, screen, etc?
D. Meeting Request.
CS President John Walz's will attending the VTS Conf, Hawaii, 23-26 April 2012.
Our 2012 CS President John Walz is making his visit to the VTS 2012 conference as
President. He will attend the 30th VLSI Test Symposium (VTS) to be held at
Hotel Hyatt Maui, Hawaii, 23-26 April, 2012 and is scheduled to meet several
groups of stakeholders associated with the conference. John would very much like to arrange a meeting
with the leaders of the Hawaii CS chapter and the Section.
E. IEEE-USA. The deadline
for making hotel reservations is April 9, 2012. The IEEE-USA Annual Meeting is
May 3-6 in Cincinnati. The region encourages each Section to send a
representative. Hotel room reservation deadline is April 9. Early bird registration ends April 13. We are told the
hotel may sell out so make your reservations now. IEEE-USA has provided a pot
of money to be used to subsidize the registration fee ($475 early rate) which
we divide among the Sections who send someone. Note that in addition the travel
expense is borne by the Section, although we can also use some of the PACE
funds (up to 25%) to help. Sections can send more than one person if desired
(although only one can be subsidized). Contact Doug Askegard with any questions
(<dougaskegard@ieee.org>). Doug is also creating a listserv of Section
PACE chairs and contacts (much like we have with the MD list). Let Doug know if
you do not have a PACE contact who you would like from your Section on this
list.
F. IEEE Global Humanitarian Conference. The
region has budgeted $10,000 again this year for the conference in Seattle. Several
sections including Hawaii and San Francisco have asked to be put on the list as
possible sites for the conference in 2013.
G. Joint CS/Section Meeting. What topic would draw
out the most members or potential members?
What about a survey of computer topics not generally covered in the news,
such as, Opel’s 100 GHz computer chip technology, Siemens RFID chips, IBM’s quantum
computing chips, translators and CACI’s high level compiler, computer security
issues like the STATFOR email disclosures, etc?
H. SQL Saturday. The annual SQL Saturday event coming up on
Friday, April 27, 2012 (I know, weird, it’s called SQL Saturday but the Hawaii
.NET Users Group does it on a Friday).
They ask for volunteers. Should the IEEE be involved?
I. Stems. I see Maker Space supporting STEMS
and all sorts of projects. How can the
IEEE be more relevant to this?
J. Arrears Recovery Outreach. We will launch our arrears recovery outreach
program this month. What activities
should we highlight to engage members to renew their membership?
K. Other Issues. What other business should we be discussing?
Seven members attended the EXCOM Meeting.
