the IEEE Hawaii Section Newsletter!

We wish to welcome Thomas Shefchick, Chris Lewis, David Kleeman,
Margaret Chiang, Steven White, and Randy Shimabukuru to the Hawaii
Section. Please come to our meetings and meet our community.
New Members
We wish to welcome May Chen, Ian Dacanay, Ryan Gough, Ryan Inouye,
John Libby, Ivan Mago, Keith Owens, Stefan Press, Aihong Rogers,
and Courtney Won to the IEEE.
Membership Promotions
A member can earn a $15 credit up to $90.00 per year for each
professional member that they recruit. The person they recruit must
provide the membership number of the one who recruited them.
Student members have a great deal being able to join both the
Computer society and IEEE for just $40.00.
Awards
All members of the Hawaii Section are encouraged to go to our
website, www.ieee.org/go/hawaii, click on "Files" at the top and
download the information on making award nominations. Honoring our
members and supporting organizations is one of our major roles.
Members who have more than ten years of significant professional
experience in their field are due to be elevated to Senior Member
status. If you have the experience and have not been elevated to
Senior Member status contact one of our officers so we can help you
achieve this distinction. We want to schedule a Senior Member
elevation event, but we need to locate members who need to be
elevated.
2013 Section Elections
John Borland is the POC for nominations. Please inform him,
johnoborland@aol.com, if you would like to nominate someone or
would like to run yourself. We need nominees for Chair, Vice-Chair,
Secretary and Treasurer. If you do not want to run in the elections,
consider serving with John on the nominations committee. Contact
John Camery, john.camery@ieee.org, if you interested in serving on
this or other committees.
Announcement: Hands-on training 2013 Rational Software Open Lab
IBM still has training slots available.

IEEE Budget for Humanitarian Projects
The Special Interest Group for Humanitarian Technology is looking
for projects to finance. There is $160,000 for Class A projects
which are those in the $40,000 grant size. There is $100,000 for
those in the $2000- 40,000 dollar range. Finally, there is $90,000
for grants less than $2000.
Does anyone have an idea for a project to benefit the under-served
elements of our society either here in Hawaii or the third world?

IEEE is the lead for Engineering Week 2014. The theme is Drive the
future: Turning ideas into reality
IEEE Sections Congress 2014 will be held 22–25 August 2014, in
Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the Rai Convention Center.
