1. Following the EXCOM Meeting, Dr. Anthony Kuh presents a

4. "Underwater ROV Tour suggested in last meeting" =>
Awaiting updates from Mark Rognstad
5. Section sponsored Young Professional (GOLD) STEP event was
suggested at the last webcast, since we don't have a GOLD affinity group. Kenny Luong will help organize the STEP event for the Section. The Section will apply for $500 to put on this event.
6. IEEE Election & Future leadership development within our
Section => All IEEE Hawaii members interested in leadership positions in our section (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer) & in our Comm./SPS chapter (Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary) are encouraged to submit nominations. It is important to develop new leadership due to term limits on the members that are currently in leadership roles in our section. No nominations submitted for section vice chair, section treasurer, Comm./SPS chapter vice chair, Comm./SPS chapter secretary. We will use Vtools as the teller. We will allow write-in votes (approved by section in 2012). We may need to explore the possibility of combining the secretary and treasurer positions. EXCOM Meeting in September. |

Topic: Advanced Analytics – The next frontier for innovation and STEM jobs
The amount of information available via the Internet and social media is exploding and this trend is expected to continue. According to IBM, structured data constitutes only 20% of the overall data produced. Remaining 80% of the data is unstructured or semi structured. According to a report published by McKinsey Global Institute, there will be a shortage of talent necessary for organizations to take advantage of this data. McKinsey Global Institute predicts that by 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 workers and 1.5 million managers and analysts that need analytics expertise. This presentation will cover 1. Why is advanced analytics the hottest STEM topic? 2. What is the current status of advanced analytics? 3. What are the future perspectives of advanced analytics?
Biography: Kishore Erukulapati works as a senior Information Technology (IT) Consultant in the IT division of a major health insurance company in Honolulu, HI. He is an IT professional with 16 years of experience. He gained global and diverse experience by working in the USA, the UK, Germany and India.
Kishore has a Bachelor of Technology degree in computer science and engineering and a Master of Science degree in quality assurance. He is working towards a PhD in Technology Management degree.
Kishore holds various certifications through numerous professional bodies, all of which underscore his desire to be well connected to technical aspects of his diverse work in quality, professionally. He recently received the “Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence” certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and “Certified Senior Technology Manger” certification from the Association of Technology, Manufacturing, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). He is a senior professional member of ASQ and is a professional member of IEEE and ATMAE. He is serving as an acting secretary of IEEE Hawaii chapter.

2. Chapter Update
The Maui Chapter of the Hawaii Student Branch of the IEEE hostedthe first annual Student Innovation Day this past April at the new
Science Building on the University of Hawaii Maui College campus.
The Student Innovation Day was designed to exhibit the projects and
talents of the students enrolled in Maui College s Electronics and
Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) Associated Arts program and
the Engineering Technology Bachelor of Applied Science program.
Also at UH, students from the Hilo Computer Science Department won
the 2013 Microsoft U.S. Imagine Cup and will entering the worldwide
completion in Russia next month. Team Poliahu from came out on top
with its application Help Me Help, which focused on community aid
for disaster relief efforts.

Abstract: This talk starts by discussing Hawai’i’s energy landscape and the Renewable Energy and Island Sustainability (REIS) program. The state of Hawai’i and the US Department of Energy (DOE) signed a memorandum of understanding in 2008 known as the Hawai’i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) requiring 70% of Hawaii’s energy come from clean sources by 2030.
At the beginning of 2009 we formed a multidisciplinary research and education program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, (REIS) to focus on renewable energy, sustainability, and smart grids. The REIS group won an internal UHM sustainability competition in 2009 and in 2010 won a DOE work force training grant in the Strategic Training and Education in Power Systems. We discuss goals of our group including building the REIS program, research and education activities, and interfacing with other UHM sustainability efforts, outside academic institutions, industry, and government.
We then discuss the University of Hawai’i Manoa (UHM) Smart Sustainable Microgrid Project. This project is in coordination with the UHM Department of Electrical Engineering, UHM facilities, and Hawaiian Electric Company. We discuss some of the goals and research of this project which include; sensing and monitoring, modeling and analysis, optimization and control, and social and economic and policy considerations. This talk focuses on applying signal processing methods to the sensing and monitoring project and also the modeling and analysis project. We also discuss a new Smart Campus Energy Lab and the UHM microgrid which will serve as a laboratory testbed.

Biography: Anthony Kuh received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
at the University of California, Berkeley in 1979, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from
Stanford University in 1980, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton
University in 1987. Dr. Kuh previously worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories and has been
on the faculty in Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawai’i since 1986. He is currently a Professor in the Department and is also currently serving as director of the interdisciplinary renewable energy and island sustainability (REIS) group. Previously, he served as Department Chair of Electrical Engineering Dr. Kuh's research is in the area of neural networks and machine learning, adaptive signal processing, sensor networks, communication networks, and renewable energy and smart grid applications.
Dr. Kuh won a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award
and is an IEEE Fellow. He was also a recipient of the Boeing A. D. Welliver Fellowship and received a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar’s Award working at Imperial College in London. Dr. Kuh was an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, served on the IEEE Neural Networks Administrative Committee, served on the IEEE Neural Networks for Signal Processing Committee, and was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. Dr. Kuh co-chaired the 1993 International Symposium on Nonlinear Theory and Its Applications (NOLTA) and served as the technical co-chair for the 2007 IEEE ICASSP both held in Honolulu. He is currently serving as the IEEE Signal Processing Society Regions 1-6 Director at Large, on the Board of Governors of the Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association, and as a senior editor of the IEEE Selected Topics on Signal Processing Journal.

UH-Maui IEEE Student Innovation Day
On April 18, 2013 the Maui Chapter of the Hawaii Student Branch of the IEEE hosted the first
annual Student Innovation Day at the new Science Building on the University of Hawaii Maui College
campus. The Student Innovation Day was designed to exhibit the projects and talents of the students
enrolled in Maui College’s Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) Associated Arts
program and the Engineering Technology Bachelor of Applied Science program. Displays were set up in

Maui Ham Radio club and the Maui Makers club were invited to talk about their organizations.
Attendance averaged 40 people during the 3 hour exhibition and 20 people remained for the panel
discussion. Refreshments were provided throughout the program.

annual Student Innovation Day at the new Science Building on the University of Hawaii Maui College
campus. The Student Innovation Day was designed to exhibit the projects and talents of the students
enrolled in Maui College’s Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) Associated Arts
program and the Engineering Technology Bachelor of Applied Science program. Displays were set up in
